Unit Trust of India or UTI is a SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) registered mutual fund. It is the oldest and one of the largest mutual funds in India with over 10 million investor accounts. UTI Mutual Fund was mainly promoted by four large public sectors banks like Financial (LIC) Life Insurance Corporation of India, (SBI) State Bank of India, (BOB) Bank of Baroda and (PNB) Punjab National Bank.

In compliance with the SEBI (Mutual Funds) Regulations 1996, UTI Mutual Fund was formed. Comprising a three-tier structure namely UTI Mutual Fund, UTI Trustee Company Pvt. Ltd., (the Trustee Company to UTI Mutual Fund) and UTI Asset Management Company Ltd., (the Investment Managers to UTI Mutual Fund). The UTI Mutual Fund (the Mutual Fund) was formed as a Trust on December 09, 2002 in accordance with the provisions of the Indian Trusts Act, 1882 (2 of 1882) with Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India and Life Insurance Corporation of India as the Sponsors and UTI Trustee Company Private Ltd as the Trustee. The Trust Deed has been registered under the Indian Registration Act, 1908. The Mutual Fund was registered with SEBI on January 14, 2003 under Registration Code MF/048/03/01.
Pooling of capital from the public for collective investment through the acquisition, holding, management, trading or disposal of securities or any other property whatsoever, in order to provide facilities for the participation by persons as beneficiaries in such properties or investments and in the profits or income derived therefrom.
UTI Mutual Fund is sponsored by Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India and the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). An amount of Rs 10,000 was assigned to the trustee by the Sponsors as the initial contribution to the mutual fund corpus.
UTI Trustee Company Private Limited (the Trustee) discharges its obligations as Trustee of the UTI Mutual Fund through its Board of Directors. The Trustee ensures that the transactions entered into by UTI AMC are in accordance with the SEBI Regulations and reviews the operations carried on by the UTI AMC. With effect from January 20, 2010, the sponsors viz., State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank and Life Insurance Corporation of India, which are also the shareholders of UTI AMC, have sold 26% of their respective shares holdings in UTI Trustee Co P Ltd in equal proportion to T.
