10 Key Pointers on Kunal Kamra-Eknath Shinde Row: Mumbai Police Involved, Kamra Says ‘I Won't Apologize"

Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has once again found himself at the centre of controversy after his remarks about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a performance in Mumbai. The incident has sparked political backlash and legal action, and Kunal Kamra has been summoned by Mumbai police for his statement.

Here is the entire controversy and latest updates explained in 10 points:

1. During his stand-up act at The Habitat, a popular comedy venue in Mumbai, Kamra performed a satirical song criticising Eknath Shinde. Kamra's comedy act quickly went viral across social media platforms, and the internet was divided in both support and criticism.

2. After the video of Kamra's performance was massively circulated online, members of Eknath Shinde's group, from Shiv Sena, reacted strongly. On March 24, 2025, around 20 Shiv Sena supporters vandalised The Habitat, damaging property and causing chaos. The police arrived at the spot, arresting over 10 individuals, including Shiv Sena youth leader Rahul Kanal, for their involvement in the attack, as per reports.

3. Following the controversy, Mumbai's Khar Police Station issued a summons to Kunal Kamra, asking him to appear for questioning regarding his remarks. Since Kamra was out of Maharashtra at the time, he was sent the summons via WhatsApp, as per reports.

4. Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) carried out a partial demolition of The Habitat, calling it illegally Constructed. As a result, The Habitat was temporarily shut down, sparking outrage among Mumbai's comedy community.

5. Kamra responded to the controversy by sharing an image of the Indian Constitution on Instagram, emphasizing freedom of expression. Earlier today, Kunal Kamra shared a video on his Instagram account featuring a song from the same act. The song, titled "Hum Honge Kangal", plays over footage showing the vandalism of the venue where the stand-up act was performed, along with clips of protesters burning his dummy in protest.

6. Kamra issued a statement yesterday saying, "An entertainment venue is merely a platform. A space for all sorts of shows. Habitat (or any other venue) is not responsible for my comedy, nor does it have any power or control over what I say or do."

7. When asked about an apology, Kamra firmly said, "I will not apologize." He pointed out that his remarks were similar to those made by Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar about Eknath Shinde.

8. Kamra agreed to cooperate with the police and courts if needed. His statement read "However, I am willing to cooperate with the police and courts for any lawful action taken against me. But will the law be fairly and equally deployed against those who have decided that vandalism is the appropriate response to being offended by a joke? And against the unelected members of the BMC, who have arrived today at Habitat, without prior notice, and torn the place down with hammers?" Kamra added

9. This Kunal Kamra controversy has again reignited discussions about freedom of speech and political satire in India. Many artists and comedians have spoken out in support of Kamra, arguing that criticism of politicians should be taken lightly and involving law in it is very unnecessary.

10. At the same time, India is seeing increasing restrictions on comedy and satire, with several comedians facing legal action for their work. Recently, Ranveer Allahbadia found himself in trouble after his controversial statements on Samay Raina's show, India's Got Latent, which led to the indefinite discontinuation of the comedy show. Even older episodes of the show were taken down from YouTube, raising serious questions about freedom of speech in the country. It is yet to be seen where the water flows, but this incident has created a stir amongst online viewers as well as political members specially in Mumbai.
