The Sensex ended the day higher by 65 points, while the Nifty drifted higher by 16.60 points.
Volumes were low in the absence of institutional support and markets were rangebound for most of the 90 minutes.
Metals stocks saw smart gains in trade today with Hindalco, Jindal Steel and Sterlite Industries jumping smartly. Other shares that gained among index stocks included Tata Motors, Infosys and Hindustan Unilever.
Stocks that had subdued closing included Power Grid Corporation, Bharti Airtel and BPCL.
