Among the shares that rallied in trade today were Infosys, Bhel, Bharti Airtel and BPCL. Among the shares that lost ground from the index stocks in early trade were TCS, which continued to grind lower for the second successive day, Jaiprakash Associates and Wipro.

Shares of aviation companies were trading mixed with Kingfisher Airlines trading higher by 5% and SpiceJet dropping marginally.

Shares of retail companies which were in the limelight following the announcement of FDI in multibrand retail were also trading mixed with Pantaloon Retail marginally down, while Provogue and Trent were trading higher.

Banking stocks saw some profit booking with ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and State Bank of India shedding gains after Monday's spectacular rally.

Shares of heavyweight Reliance Industries was trading little unchanged over Monday's levels.
