Among the index gainers in trade today were Kotak Bank, ACC, Dr Reddy's Laboratories and ITC. One of the worst performers from amongst the non index stocks was Crompton Greaves, which saw its shares fall more than 8% following a dismal set of Q2 numbers.

Shares from the S&P CNX Nifty that dropped were Hindalco, Bajaj Auto, IDFC and Jaiprakash Associates.

Banking stocks ended the day lower with ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and State Bank of India all dropping in trade. PSU banks too bore the brunt of the selling pressure with Allahabad Bank, Andhra Bank and IOB dropping sharply.

FMCG stocks like ITC and Hindustan Unilever ended the day with gains, following buying support in the stocks. Heavyweight, Reliance Industries ended the day with marginal losses.

Technology stocks like Infosys, Wipro and TCS lost marginal ground by the end of trading.

Meanwhile, markets in Asia ended the day with losses, ahead of key Presidential elections in the US.

Markets in India and across the globe are likely to await the outcome of the US presidential elections, before any direction is determined.
