Retail inflation rises sharply to 10.79%
Retail inflation, measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), stood at 10.79% in the month of January 2013, higher from 10.56% during the previous month.

The CPI index measures retail prices in major food groups, fuel, clothing, housing and education across rural and urban India.

The corresponding provisional inflation rates for rural and urban areas for January 2013 are 10.88% and 10.73% respectively.

Inflation rates (final) for rural and urban areas for December 2012 are 10.74% and 10.42% respectively.

CPI figures along with the wholesale price index figures are crucial, when it comes to an RBI decision to cut the repo rates.

Price data are collected from selected towns by the Field Operations Division of NSSO and from selected villages by the Department of Posts. Price data are received through web portals being maintained by the National Informatics Centre.
