Govt seeks nod for additional spending of Rs 49,715 cr

The Finance Minister today tabled the second supplementary demand for grants that has sought an extra spending of Rs 49,715 crores.

A bulk of the supplementary spending will be used to meet fertiliser, food and fuel subsidies. The additional fuel subsidy outgo has been pegged at Rs 24,773.75 crore, food at Rs 9,914.06 crores and fertiliser at Rs 4,753.99 crores.

The government has over the last few months initiated ways to control the mounting subsidy, particularly related to fuel. It has already allowed oil marketing companies to systematically raise the prices of diesel, while capping the limit on subsidied LPG cylinders.
