Sensex surges past 20,000 pts led by gains in Reliance
The Nifty ended the day higher by 99 points in trade. Among the top gainers from the Nifty apart from Reliance were Indusind Bank, Sun Pharma, Bharti Airtel, Ranbaxy Labs, TCS and HDFC.
Among the top losers from the Nifty were Mahindra and Mahindra, Lupin, Bank of Baroda, Maruti Suzuki, BPCL and Grasim.
Mid cap stocks also saw some buying interest with notable gainers from the space being Hexaware, Opto Circuits and Apollo Tyres. Reliance Communications gained after the company hiked prepaid rates for mobile charges.
Shares of Spicejet, slipped over 6 per cent in early trade on Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on posting lower-than-estimated March quarter earnings numbers.
Coal India, however, rallied after reports that the Government was calling off stake sale on opposition from unions.
Crompton Greaves had a disappointing session after the company reported lower then expected profits. Real estate stocks ended the day higher after a sharp rally in Anant Raj industries, DB Realty and Unitech.
Public sector banking names were subdued in trade today, though the Bank Nifty closed higher.
Meanwhile, markets in Asia ended the day mostly lower with the Japanese Nikkei closing lower by more then 3 per cent.
