Following an RBI directive, PIN and chip enabled debit cards would now come into force from June 30, 2013, thus providing additional security for debit card and online transactions.
While the chip card will process data securely, the PIN will provide another layer of security for Debit Card holders.
If the existing cards do not have this double layer of security they will have to be replaced. Banks are already sending out mails informing customers of the new secure debit cards.
The old cards which have been replaced would now be de-activated by the banks.
