Date for Income Tax Return filing extended to August 5, 2013

Date for Income Tax Return filing extended to August 5, 2013
The government today extended the date for filing of income tax returns for salaried and non-auditable cases from July 31, 2013 to August 5, 2013. This has been done in view of the overwhelming response for online income tax return filing from across the country.

Previously, to the respite of taxpayers assessed or residing in the flood-hit Uttarakhand region, the CBDT extended the due date for filing of income tax return from 31st July, 2013 to 31st October, 2013.

Further, as the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) mandated the filing of income tax returns by salaried individuals who earn up to Rs. 5 lakh per annum, the department is expecting a considerable increase in the number of e-filing.

According to reports, till Monday as many as 82 lakh returns have been filed, which is 40% higher in comparison to the number of returns filed in the corresponding period last year. On 30th July' 2013, the income tax department registered a record high of over 85,000 returns per hour.

Some taxpayers have reported difficulties in accessing the online portal for filing of income tax returns on account of network constraints of the Internet service providers. However, the portal is reported to be working without interruptions and is being constantly monitored by officials of the income tax in Bangalore. The condition will be again examined by the CBDT tomorrow morning.
