
The Sensex ended the day lower by 179 points (provisional), while the Nifty dropped 46 points in early trade. Among the losers were Gail, ONGC, Sun Pharma, Kotak Mahindra and Coal India.
Among the top losers from the Nifty were the HDFC twins, including HDFC Bank ad HDFC. Other Nifty losers were ONGC, Maruti and Tata Consultancy Services. Punjab national Bank fell almost 4 per cent, after its results disappointed the markets.
Nifty gainers in trade today were Tata Motors, Tata Steel and Larsen and Toubro.
Wockhardt continued to rally after the UK Regulator okays company to supply, manufacture most products at Kadaiya unit.
Mid cap stocks gained ground despite weakness in the index. Among the notable gainers from the space were GMR Infra, HDIL and IFCI.
Tata Motors rallied 1 per cent in trade today ahead of its results to be declared later today.
Titan Industries continued to grind lower after the Reserve Bank of India said that foreign institutional investors would need prior nod before buying shares in the company.
Real estate stocks had a good session in trade today with IndiaBulls Realty jumping almost 9 per cent, DLF jumped 3 per cent and HDIL jumped 4 per cent.
Pharma stocks had a mixed day in trade with Lupin gaining ground, while Dr Reddy's and Sun Pharma fell.
Meanwhile, markets in Europe were trading lower, with the German DAX, French CAC and the UK's FTSE advancing in trade.
