Households account for highest deposits with banks across categories: RBI
As per the RBI study on the ownership and composition of deposit accounts held with scheduled commercial banks across India, it has been revealed that households dominate with a majority holding. Of the total deposit of Rs. 71,46,600 crore with different banks in the country as of March 2013, households accounted for close to 60% of the deposits. The government sector, financial sector, non-financial corporate sector and foreign entities held 14%, 12.4%, 10% and 4% respectively of the total deposits.

In the household segment, individuals together with Hindu Undivided Families or HUFs contributed the highest percentage in the range of 77%-80%. Further, such domination of the household group was seen across different deposit accounts with banks, including savings, current and term deposit account. Of the total savings, current and term deposits with different banks, they held 80%, 40% and 50% of the accounts respectively.

 

Also, bank branches located in metros witnessed a rise in deposit account in comparison to the preceding years as more and more deposit accounts originated there. Urban bank branches contributed deposits in the range of 20%-22%; semi-urban branches accounted for approximately 13%-14% and branches in the rural area accounted for approximately 8%-14% of the deposits.

 

The study also highlighted that deposits by farmers increased during the financial year 2012-2013 by 49% on the back of higher cash flow stream as minimum support price for several food and non-food articles was increased during the year.
