Sensex, Nifty close at record high; Mid cap index hits historic peak
The Sensex ended the day higher at another record closing of 25019 points, while the Nifty also closed the day higher by 71 points, at another record closing of 7474 points.
Action shifted to the mid cap space where the mid cap index hit a historic peak of 3309 points. Mid cap stocks that saw stellar gains in trade were Reliance Infra, Reliance Power, Steel Authority of India, Bharat Forge, India Cements and Havells India rallying in trade.
Select infra stocks were back in the limelight with Gammon India, Gammon Infra and HCC gaining ground.
Banking stocks were the clear underperformers in trade with HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, IndusInd Bank and Yes Bank losing ground. Select PSU banking stocks also turned weak in trade on profit booking.
Realty stocks that gained ground on hopes of tax breaks for real estate investment trusts saw some profit booking in trade.
Meanwhile, markets in Europe were steady on hopes that European Central Bank will ease monetary policy to support a fragile economic recovery.
The German DAX, the French CAC and the UK's FTSE were all trading flat.
