The eagerly awaited Union Budget 2014 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has now been presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. Here are a few things that are likely to be cheaper and those that are likely to be expensive. It all depends on companies whether they pass on the excise cuts or hikes to consumers.

    1) Cigarettes

As was widely expected Cigarettes are likely to get more expensive. Excise duty on cigarettes has been hiked between 11% to 72%. Cigarettes which have been damaging your health, is now likely to damage your finances.

    2) Aerated drinks

Aerated drinks including the colas are likely to get costlier after a 5 per cent excise duty is imposed on aerated drinks with sugar. Once again the move is good for your health.

    3) Ghutkas

Ghutkas get expensive as excise duty is hiked. A Good decision keeping in mind your health.

    4) Stainless steel products

Stainless steel products may get costlier as the duty on the same is increased.

    1) LCDs, LEDs on TV s below 19 inches

Custom duties on the below have been reduced, what this means is that the products are likely to get cheaper.

    2) Footwear

The excise duty on footwear has been slashed to 6% from 12%. Hope companies like Bata reduce prices.

    3) Colour picture tubes

We wonder if anybody is using them any longer. In any case colour picture tubes to be exempted from customs duty, would make them cheaper.

    4) Jewellery

A rationalisation of duty on diamonds is likelt to benefit the jewellery sector.

    5) Soaps

The reduction of duty on fatty acid and glycerine is likely to make soap and oil products cheaper.
