Leading the set of losers on the Nifty was Infosys which fell 3 per cent despite a brokerage upgrading the stock. Other notable losers in trade from the Nifty were Sesa Sterlite and Coal India.

Hindalco was the star in trade today with the stock closing the day higher by more than 4 per cent. Other Nifty stocks that gained ground in trade were Tata Steel, Tata Power and Tata Motors.

Shares in TVS Motor Company ended the day higher after reports that the company has displaced Bajaj Auto as the third largest two-wheeler maker after good scooter sales.

PSU banking stocks saw smart gains after initially falling in early morning trade. Leading the set of gainers were Bank of India, Canara Bank, Syndicate Bank and Oriental Bank of Commerce.

Mid cap stocks ended the day higher with gains seen in stocks like Crompton, GMR and IFCI.

However, select mid caps like Jubilant Food and Mcleod Russell lost ground. Realty stocks also saw some buying interest with Indiabulls surging as much as 2 per cent.

Meanwhile, markets in Europe were trading higher led by the German DAX, which showed a strong performance like its Football World Cup winning team.
