Sensex, Nifty open higher on strong global cues; Bharti gains 2%

Benchmark indices opened the day higher once again with the Sensex gaining 98 points in early trade and the Nifty rallying 26 points.

Bharti Airtel, DLF and Sun Pharma were the top gainers in trade today. Shares in Axis Bank were trading higher ahead of its results to be declared later today. Idea Cellular which reported a good set of numbers was trading higher along with Bharti Airtel, which was the top gainer from the Nifty today.

Select nifty stocks like Grasim, Hindalco and HCL Tech lost ground from the Nifty. Reliance Industries was trading higher despite reports that the company has surrendered one more oil and gas block. India's largest real estate company DLF was trading higher after reports that the company is selling a 30-acre land parcel inHyderabad's Raidurg area to a local builder.

Mid cap stocks were having a quiet session in trade. However, Voltas saw good buying interest and the stock was up more than 2 per cent in trade. Canara Bank which reported a dismal set of results was trading lower for the second day in a row. Other PSU banks like Allahabad Bank and IDBI Bank were also down in trade.

In Asian trade, the Japanese and the Chinese markets were higher after worries in the Middle East began to ebb.
