ICICI Bank and Hero Motor Corp were the select Sensex stocks that ended the day lower in trade. Cairn India fell as much as 6 per cent in trade after the company's profits fell and on reports that it is extending a loan to the Vedanta group.

Select banking stocks ended the day higher including Bank of India, Yes Bank and Bank of Baroda. Shares in Ipca Laboratories fell almost 11 per cent in trade after reports that the company has stopped shipments from its Ratlam unit for the US market as it got certain inspection observations from USFDA.

Shares in Container Corporation ended the day higher after the company said it got Navrathna status from the Government.

Select mid cap stocks like GMR Infra, Sun TV and Voltas came in for selling pressure. However, realty stocks had a good day in trade with Sobha Developers, Unitech and Oberoi Realty ending the day with gains.

Meanwhile, markets in Europe were trading with marginal losses with the UK's FTSE, the German DAX and the French CAC trading with losses.
