Sensex, Nifty open lower on weak Asian cues following Ukraine worries

The Sensex and the Nifty opened the day lower on the back of weak Asian equities, following worries that tensions in Ukraine could lead to a military conflict.

The Sensex was trading lower by 18 points, while the Nifty fell 14 points in trade. Leading the set of losers from the Nifty were Hero Motor Corp, ITC and Tata Power.

Shares in Hindustan Unilever, Tata Steel, Tata Consultancy and Wipro were among the gainers in trade. Mid cap stocks also lost ground with GMR Infra, NHPC and IGL among the losers.

Shares in IDBI Bank were trading marginally lower ahead of the bank's results to be declared later today. Bata India which reported a decline in its net profits saw its shares dropping in trade.

HDIL was trading higher after Merrill Lynch Capital Markets Espana picked up over 30 lakh shares of real estate player.
Shares in Infosys continued to rally and the stock was up 2 per cent again in trade today. Infrastructure stocks like Gammon Infra, Gammon India and GMR fell in trade today.

Meanwhile, most of the Asian markets were trading lower on the back of worries over escalating tensions in Ukraine.
