Sensex, Nifty end at fresh record highs; ONGC rallies

The Sensex and the Nifty ended the day at fresh record highs led by gains in ONGC and HDFC Bank. The Sensex closed the day higher by 293 points, at a fresh record high of 27,319 points, while the Nifty rallied 87 points in trade.

Apart from ONGC, the stock that saw maximum gains from the Sensex was Hindalco, which jumped more than three per cent.

Sensex stocks that ended the day lower were NTPC and Maruti. Mid cap stocks also had a super day in trading, with Godrej Industries, Havells India, Crompton Greaves and MRF among the gainers. Bhushan Steel was once again locked at the upper end of the circuit filter in trade.

Tech stocks continued to have a good day in trade with TCS and Infosys among the gainers. PSU banking stocks finally saw some traction with shares like Canara Bank, Union Bank of India and IDBI Bank seeing gains.

Shares in Ceat surged a huge 20 per cent on a drop in rubber prices.

Meanwhile, markets across Europe were trading with marginal losses, while Asian markets including the Japanese Nikkei and the Shanghai Composite ended the day with gains.
