Sensex, Nifty Close at a Fresh Record High; Banking Stocks Soar

The Sensex and the Nifty closed at a fresh record high as European markets opened strong after the US markets closed at a new record high.

Strong cues from across the globe pushed stocks further with the Sensex hitting a new record closing of 28334 points. trade.

Leading the set of gainers on the Nifty were stocks from the banking space after Kotak announced that it was taking over ING Vysya Bank.

Potential takeover targets from the banking space rallied following the Kotak ING Vysya news. Karnataka Bank, South Indian Bank were among the winners.

ICICI Bank hitting a fresh 52-week high on sustained buying. Axis Bank, State Bank of India and Canara Bank were among the winners.

Mid cap stocks also saw some buying interest in trade with notable winners being IFCI and Voltas. Meanwhile, markets across Asia ended the day with gains, while most of Europe was trading higher. The German DAX, French CAC and the UK's FTSE were trading with gains.
