Sensex, Nifty Gain Ground; Wipro Rallies Post Results

The Sensex and the Nifty gained ground in trade today as select tech stocks rallied. The Sensex closed the day higher by 140 points, while the Nifty rallied 36 points in trade. Wipro led gainers in trade with the stock rallying a huge 6 per cent in trade following a good set of Q3 numbers. Other stocks that gained ground in trade were Gail, Mahindra and Mahindra, ICICI Bank, Larsen and Toubro and Cipla.

Nifty losers in trade were stocks like Hindustan Unilever, Tata Consultancy Services and DLF. Shares in Ramky Infra gained ground after the company won a major order. The stock was up almost six per cent.

Banking stocks were in the limelight with notable winners being Axis Bank and ICICI Bank. PSU banking stocks ended the day mixed with Canara Bank gaining ground, while State Bank of India and Bank of India ended the day on a subdued note. Hindustan Unilver fell a huge 4 per cent following results that lagged estimates.

JSW Energy was the top gainer from the Mid Cap Index along with Hindustan Zinc and Reliance Infra.

Meanwhile, markets across Asia rallied, while most of Europe was trading higher on hopes of fresh stimulus. The Shanghai Composite, however, fell a huge six per cent after fresh restrictions were imposed.
