Sensex, Nifty End Flat; Infosys Rallies

The Sensex and the Nifty ended the day flat gravitating between gains and losses. Leading the set of gainers from the Nifty was Infosys which led a sharp rally after falling on Thursday.

Indices

PSU Banking stocks which have seen a spectacular fall in the last few trading sessions, bounced back sharply led by gains in State Bank of India. Other banking stocks like Punjab National Bank which had fallen a huge 4 per cent in trade during the day recovered sharply.

SBI was the top gainer in trade along with Infosys. Heavyweight HDFC continued to languish and fell on selling pressure once again. Heavyweights ITC and Hindustan Unilever also dropped in trade. ITC also continued to decline in trade and has now lost significant ground.

Both HDFC and ITC have a significant weightage in the index.

Bharti Airtel which has surged in the last few days fell sharply as investors remained concerned on balance sheet expansion following the spectrum allocation.

The stock dropped a huge 6 per cent, while Idea Cellular also fell in trade. Meanwhile, markets across Europe were trading flat, while most of Asia ended the day lower on worries over
