Benchmark indices ended the day flat after trading higher in trade led by solid gains in IT stocks.

The Sensex ended the day higher by 17 points, while the Nifty gained 1.80 points in trade. Leading the set of gainers were IT stocks like Tech Mahindra, Infosys, TCS and Wipro.

Shares in MindTree surged after the company reported a better than expected results for the quarter ending June 30, 2015.

Sun Pharma also ended the day higher after CLSA upgraded the stock to a buy. After falling for several trading sessions, Vedanta finally saw some buying support at lower levels and ended 2 per cent higher.

HDFC, Hindustan Unilever and Asian Paints were the top losers from the Nifty. Mid cap stocks also had a good session with gainers from the space being KPIT and CESC. Britannia and IndiaBulls Housing were the other gainers.

Meanwhile, markets across Europe were trading with marginal losses, while most of Asia ended higher. The German DAX, French CAC and the UK's FTSE were all higher in trade
