Railways, metros and bus services will not accept old Rs 500 notes after December 10. The Government had earlier allowed the use of Rs 500 notes for a number of purposes including public transport, purchasing railway tickets, metro tickets till December 15.
The government withdrew use of 1,000 rupee notes for utility bill payments and discontinued use of even 500 denomination notes for services like the purchase of petrol and diesel at petrol pumps as well as for buying air ticket at airport counters.

The old 500 rupee notes can be used for making payments of utility bills like electricity and water. Old currency notes can also use for buying cooking gas and mobile recharge.
To promote digital transactions amid cash crunch following the withdrawal of old Rs 500 and 1,000 banknotes government on Thursday waived off service tax on debit and credit transactions up to Rs 2,000.
