The PAN and Aadhaar linking shall weed out benami transactions as well as the existence of duplicate PANs from the system.

So if the Supreme Court approves the stand, the current deadline to link the biometric enabled Aadhaar with PAN issued by the tax department of December 31st 2017 shall be extended by another 3-6 months time.

Post this, government will be empowered to cancel all the PANs not linked with the biometric ID. The government has notified the Supreme Court of its intention to extend the deadline to March 31, 2018.

The PAN and Aadhaar linking shall weed out benami transactions as well as the existence of duplicate PANs from the system.

This year for filing ITRs quoting of Aadhaar has been made mandatory. Also the new PAN cannot be obtained without providing Aadhaar ID.
