The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will soon introduce multiple options to pay toll charges for traveling on National Highway. The options will include paying through prepaid e-wallets, credit cards or directly through bank accounts.

This will automate the process to skip the wait in long queues of commuters waiting for their chance to make payments at toll plazas. The amount will be deducted from your bank account or e-wallet. It will help those who do not use smart tags (FASTags) or do not recharge them.
The NHAI has chosen five innovations to provide this facility. These are being tested in the stretches of Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Chandigarh, Delhi-Kolkata and Bengaluru-Chennai reported TOI. A mobile app will also be unveiled in the coming months to include these facilities.
The users will have to download the app and register with their vehicle number which will be verified from the national vehicle database. The app will allow you to make prepayments to all toll plazas before you start the journey using e-wallets. When you reach the toll plaza, you will have to scan through a QR code generated by the system to cross it.
The second option is to link the app with UPI so that the amount can directly be deducted from your bank account.
The technologies tested will allow the system to detect the toll lane, the vehicle category and the amount to be deducted as soon as the vehicle arrives at the toll plaza. The amount will then be deducted from the e-wallet or bank account through UPI.
