Surat Railway Station To Have Airport Like Amenities
As part of the railways redevelopment initiative, Gujarat will have the second railway station to have world class facility at Surat. The officials said that the Surat station will feature some of the amenities similar to an airport under the ministry's 'Rs 1 lakh crore station redevelopment' programme.
SITCO, a joint venture for executing the project has been established between IRSDC, the Surat Municipal Corporation and the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation. The officials confirmed that a Request for qualification and Request for proposal has been invited to built multi-modal transportation hub at the Surat Railway station.
The existing structure may be dismantled and the scope of the project includes development, redevelopment as well as real-estate development of a new railway station as well as a world-class bus stop. The state-of-the-art facilities will keep be built as per the green building norms.
IRSDC Managing Director S K Lohia said, "It is an unique project, in which three levels of government have come together to redevelop the station. The Centre, the state as well as the urban local body will pool land together, which is a first. The construction will start this year". And the hub will be developed with a cost of Rs. 5000 crore and is expected to be completed by 2020.
The station would be a multi-modal transport hub with a bus terminal having a built-up area of 40,724 sqm, Lohia added
The facility will include 5 road under-bridges as well as a parking space for as many as 900 vehicles. As per the officials, the new railway station will cater to as many as 3,49,684 passengers on a daily basis.
The other two world-class stations namely Gandhinagar and Habibganj will be ready by next year.
The IRSDC has been asked to revamp 800 railway stations across the country.
