To Support Kerala Crisis FM Proposes Cess On Some Goods Under GST
As per a state minister's statement in a PTI report, FM Jaitley has proposed the levy of cess on some of the goods under the indirect GST regime to support flood-hit Kerala state.
In a tweet, Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Isaac said, ""Kerala welcomes the suggestion of hon'ble FM for a national level cess on selected commodities for a specified period to help such states". Also, he said the provisions of GST should be made flexible in order to tide over such unforeseen crisis situation.
The matter shall be taken up by the GoM at the next GST Council's meet slated for September 28.
The issue was taken up in a discussion between FM and Kerala finance minister on Thursday to help the state's rehabilitation at the faster pace. As per a preliminary study, Rs. 20,000 crore worth of damage has occurred due to floods.
Under the four slab GST regime, sin and luxury items attract cess over and above the GST charges.
