The website of SBI read, "Attention INB (Internet Banking) users, please register your mobile number with us immediately, if not already done, through Branch, failing which the Internet Banking facility may be blocked with effect from 01.12.2018".

Previously an RTI query revealed that a total of 1,329 fraudulent transactions involving a stupendous sum of Rs 5,555.48 crore have been reported in the first six months of the current fiscal year in the country's largest public sector bank. As per the details given by the bank in response to the RTI query, in the second quarter, the number of fraud cases reduced by just 9 in comparison to 669 cases reported in the first quarter while the amount involved increased by a staggering 568.33%.

The RTI also investigated about the loss to the bank as a result of banking frauds. But SBI in its response said, this amount cannot be quantified. Further in respect of the financial loss incurred by bank's customers during the given period due to banking frauds, SBI said, "The information relating to the incidents of frauds with SBI customers and the amount lost by the SBI customers is not compiled in the ordinary course of business and hence, exempted from disclosure under Section 7 (9) of the RTI Act, 2005."
