HDFC Bank has revised its late payment charges on credit card. The late payment charges apply when the credit cardholder does not pay even the minimum amount that is due by the due date. With effect from April 1, 2019, the private sector bank will charge more for monthly statement balances over Rs. 500 in case of late payment. So, cardholders should in all possibility try to make the credit card payment before the due date.

On every credit card, the minimum due amount is 5% of the total outstanding amount.
Revised charges on HDFC cards excluding the Infinia cards are as follows:
1. Statement balance - Rs. 100: There are no late payment charges on credit card with statement balance up to Rs. 100
2. Statement balance: Rs 100 to Rs 500
Late payment charges till March 31, 2019: Rs 100
Late payment charges from April 1, 2019: 100
3. Statement balance: Rs 501 to Rs 5000
Late payment charges till March 31, 2019: Rs 400
Late payment charges from April 1, 2019: Rs 500
4. Statement balance: Rs 5001 to Rs 10000
Late payment charges till March 31, 2019: Rs 500
Late payment charges from April 1, 2019: Rs 600
5. Statement balance: Rs 10000 to Rs 25000
Late payment charges till March 31, 2019: Rs 750
Late payment charges from April 1, 2019: Rs 800
6. Statement balance: More than Rs 25000
Late payment charges till March 31, 2019: Rs 750
Late payment charges from April 1, 2019: Rs 950
So, at least the minimum due balance on credit card should be paid on or before the due date to avoid late payment charges. On the due date, a credit card holder can pay the minimum amount, make partial payment or pay the dues in full. And it is only when the credit card bill is paid in full, interest is not charged.
