Govt To Issue A Rs 20 Coin For The First Time Ever

In a Gazette, the Ministry of Finance said that it will be rolling out a Rs 20 coin in the shape of a 12-edged polygon. This is the first time ever a Rs 20 coin will be issued in the country.

The notification was in regard to the new standardization of rules for the minting of coins called "the Coinage of One Rupee, Two Rupees, Five Rupees, Ten Rupees and Twenty Rupees Rules, 2019."

According to the notification, the Rs 20 coin will have an outside diameter of 27 mm and will be in the shape of a 12-edged polygon. It will not have any serrations. Its outer ring will be nickel silver, while the center piece will be made of nickel brass.

The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar with the legend "Satyamev Jayate" (in Devnagri script) inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word "Bharat" (in Devnagri script) and on the right periphery with the word "INDIA" in English.

The other side will bear denominational value "20" in the international numerals. The Rupee symbol shall be shown above the denominational value. The design of grains depicting the agricultural dominance of the country is flanked on the left periphery of the coin. The top right and bottom right peripheries shall bear the word "Bees Rupiye" in Hindi (in Devnagri script) and "TWENTY RUPEES" in English.

The year of minting in international numerals shall be shown on centre of the left periphery of the coin.
