Budget 2019: You Can Now Quote Aadhaar For Filing ITR; PAN No Longer Mandatory
To enable greater transparency and facilitate easy tax administration, the Finance Ministrer in its Budget 2019 speech proposed inter-changeability of PAN with Aadhaar. The FM noted, "Those who don't have PAN, can file ITR by simply quoting Aadhaar number".
So, by simply providing Aadhaar number, taxpayers can pay their taxes without the need for a PAN card.
The Finance Minister highlighted that the unique Aadhaar Id has reached 120 crore Indians.
In February this year, the Supreme Court upheld that Aadhaar would be compulsorily required for filing of income tax returns as well as PAN allotment. But it would not be mandatory to link bank accounts with aadhaar and also telecom service providers cannot insist on its linking with mobile SIMs.
