In her maiden Budget speech, Nirmala Sitharaman in this context said, "Government will initiate steps to empower accountholders to remedy the current situation in which they do not have control over a deposit of cash by others in their accounts. Reforms will also be undertaken to strengthen governance in Public Sector Banks."

In the present situation, a person does not require the prior consent of the bank account holder to deposit money in his or her account, provided he or she knows the account number of the beneficiary.

Now, the account holder has to give his consent before cash is deposited.
