US Lifts Country-Cap On Green Card Issuance; Indian IT Professionals To Benefit

On Wednesday, the US law making body, the US House of Representatives, passed a bill removing country-cap of 7% on issuance of Green Cards. A Green Card holder can live and work permanently in the US. The bill, upon being signed into law, would substantially reduce the wait time for qualified professionals from countries including India who apply for permanent residency in the US.

Usually it takes more than a decade to secure the Green Card and removing the per-country cap is expected to be primarily beneficial for highly skilled professionals from countries including India. And as per some of the latest studies, the wait period for Indian H-1B visa holders has even extended beyond 70 years.

The immigration system of the US currently imposes a 7 per cent cap per country for issuance of the most sought after Green Cards. As per the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, no more than seven per cent of the visas may be issued to natives of any one independent country in a fiscal year.

Nonetheless, the bill has to be passed by the Senate, before it can be signed by President Trump to become a law.
