India's First Upcoming Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Bullet Train To Charge For Extra Luggage

In a first-of-its kind move for the Indian Railways, the National High Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRCL), which is managing the execution of the country's first-ever high-speed bullet train, connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad, plans to charge passengers for the extra baggage. The move is aimed at curbing passengers from carrying heavy luggage. So, passengers travelling via the forthcoming bullet train may have to shell out a fee for the extra luggage.

Indias First Bullet Train To Charge For Extra Luggage

Each of the coach in the first-ever bullet train will have ample space for the hand baggage while for the extra luggage few seats of the last coach will be knocked down and for it travellers shall be charged.

Bullet train with a speed capacity of up to 350kmph is referred to as Shinkansen in Japan and people there are in the habit of travelling light and other than the check-in luggage, there is no extra space created for the purpose. But train sets that are to run in India will have to be re-designed for accommodating luggage. Also, there shall be a specific dimension for both hand and check-in luggage. Further the report quotes NHSRCL's MD who reiterates that the extra fee shall be charged not to make money from passengers but to develop a certain behavior amongst them and thus to have better control.
