To ease the commutation in smaller cities, Modi 2.0 has proposed to provide light urban rail transit systems referred as the Metrolite. The new system shall be introduced for cities with lower projection of ridership, which will run at a limited speed of 25 kmph and have 3 coaches. The specifications have been provided by the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry which will be devised on the surface and elevated stretches.

The new system shall also serve as a feeder system for high capacity Metro. With a capacity of 300 passengers, the funding of the new light transit system shall be given to the states.

The path shall be distinct from the usual road traffic and with fencing on either side. The proposed Metrolite will be able to bridge the gap required in still smaller cities, by providing a rail-based mass rapid transit system.
