The North Frontier Railway zone of the Indian Railways, on Sunday, introduced pink sleeper coaches with special reservation for women. The initiative is with a view to provide better security to the female passengers that travel alone or with minor children. The colour will help identify these reserved coaches even during rush hours.

Eight trains in the Rangiya division of the Northeast Frontier Railway, that is, passenger trains bearing numbers 55817 / 55818, 55803 / 55804 and 55809 / 55810 running between New Bongaigaon and Guwahati and 55895 / 55896 between Rangiya and Murkongselek now has special reserved pink coaches for women.

As per section 58 of the Railways Act 1989, reservation for women in most long distance trains need to be made in second class accommodation for women in the second Class-cum-Luggage-cum Guard's Coach (SLR).

The NF Railways hopes the move will encourage more women to travel long distance in trains. The zone also said that it will deploy RPF and ticket checking staff in the next few days to stabilise the new system.
