Google Allows UPI Payment For Play Store Users In India

For users of its Play Store in India, Google added UPI as an addition to its available payment options. To make payments towards purchases of apps, games and other app content, users will be able to use their preferred UPI apps like Google Pay, BHIM, Paytm and PhonePe to make payments in the next few weeks.

To avail the feature, users will have to add their UPI ID (VPA) in Google Play Store Billing to enable payments directly from their bank accounts.

The new payment method is in addition to existing payment modes of credit or debit card, net banking, direct carrier billing and gift cards. Google India hopes the new payment method to enable larger use of premium apps, games and in-app content while also helping developers and creators of the apps reach a wider audience.

Usage of the UPI mode of payment has increased greatly in the since its launch. Google said that UPI payments have seen over 50 times jump in numbers since its launch in August 2017. There were over 918 million UPI transactions in August 2019 alone.
