CPI: Retail Inflation Rises To 3.99% In September

Data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) on Consumer Price Index (CPI) showed that inflation rates rose to 3.99 percent in September as against 3.28 percent in August and 3.70 percent in the same month a year ago.

It is the highest level seen since October 2018. However, inflation levels stayed within the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) medium-term target of 4 percent.

For the month under review, most categories saw a marginal increase in prices except for "Food and Beverages" which saw its index rise from 145.9 to 147.0. With food prices, vegetable price index increased from 167.4 to 173.1. The month of September saw retail prices of onion jump by over 50 percent on account of heavy rains that hit supply.
