Bengaluru residents will face a major 24-hour water supply disruption today i.e, June 19 from 6:00 AM till Friday at 6:00 AM. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has announced a complete shutdown of the Cauvery Water Supply Scheme (Stages I to V) for emergency works. The Bengaluru water cut will last for 24 hours until 6:00 AM on June 20 and will affect large parts of Greater Bengaluru.
Why Is the Water Supply Being Stopped?
BWSSB, in a statement issued on June 16, confirmed that the water cut is required for two major reasons:
First, a massive 3000 mm diameter pipeline is being connected to the existing Cauvery Stage-V infrastructure at the Torekadanahalli (T.K. Halli) pumping station, which is expected to improve long-term water delivery across Bengaluru.
Secondly, the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd, or KPTCL, will conduct routine maintenance of electric equipment at all pumping stations. To comply with KPTCL norms, BWSSB has been instructed to halt pumping operations during this period.

Areas Affected Due to Bengaluru Water Cut
The Bengaluru water cut will impact all areas covered under Cauvery Water Supply Stages I to V, which includes Bommanahalli, Yeshwanthpur, Mahadevapura, Bengaluru South, Yelahanka, Dasarahalli, Byatarayanapura, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, and Kengeri.
Both residential and industrial consumers in these localities may experience zero or extremely reduced water supply during the 24-hour shutdown. BWSSB has advised Bangalore residents to store sufficient water in advance to avoid inconvenience.
What Is the Cauvery Stage V Project?
The Cauvery Stage V water project is a flagship upgrade by BWSSB and expects to supply an additional 775 million litres per day (MLD) to the city, which is equivalent to 10 TMCFT annually, as per official data. Once fully operational, it will increase Bengaluru's total daily water supply from 1,450 MLD to 2,225 MLD, benefiting over 50 lakh people in expanding urban zones.
This Bengaluru is already facing water stress due to declining groundwater levels and overreliance on tankers in some areas. The Cauvery Stage V project will boost long-term water sustainability in the city.
BWSSB Issues Advisory for Citizens
Due to the Bengaluru water cut, BWSSB has made a public appeal:
- Store enough water to last through the 24-hour outage.
- Avoid water wastage before and after the shutdown period.
- Spread awareness in residential communities to prevent panic.
- Industrial units are also advised to plan operations accordingly.
