MUMBAI: The first day of the three-day Global Maritime India Summit witnessed the signing of 34 agreements worth Rs 3.24 lakh crore, reflecting the commitment of various stakeholders to transforming India into a maritime powerhouse. The summit was addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi through video conferencing and attended by Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, and other dignitaries.

India's Vision for Maritime Transformation

In his speech, Sonowal highlighted Prime Minister Modi's vision for transforming transportation, which has led to significant growth in coastal and inland waterways. He emphasized the rise of smart ports and their potential to revolutionize logistics through digitization and innovative models. Sonowal also mentioned initiatives like Digital India, which showcase the government's dedication to unlocking economic growth via digitization.

Smart Ports and Digital Initiatives

The summit highlighted the importance of smart ports that utilize data, automation, IoT, and advanced analytics for safer and more efficient resource management. Sonowal proposed a digital center of excellence (DCoE) for major ports to encourage collaboration and focus on cybersecurity. He also mentioned the Harit Sagar - the green port guidelines, which promote zero waste discharge and emphasize reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle principles.

Interconnecting Major Ports and Modernizing Port Operations

Sonowal emphasized the initiatives taken towards interconnecting major ports by 2030. He highlighted the Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP) and drone-based security as examples of the government's commitment to modernizing port operations.

Collaboration, Innovation, and Skill Development

The session at the summit emphasized the need for aligning strategies with innovation outcomes, collaborative innovation for maritime capabilities, and skill development for seafarers. It also underscored the potential of the blue economy and the requirement for skilled manpower.

The Special Session with Maharashtra highlighted challenges in the state's ports and transportation sectors, transportation connectivity improvements, and strategies to enhance industrial resilience. It also covered topics like tourism promotion, policy framework initiation, and attracting investments.

Technology as an Enabler

The summit recognized the role of technology as an enabler in the maritime sector. Discussions revolved around the integration of 5G technology, which offers high-speed, low-latency connectivity, enabling real-time data exchange and facilitating remote monitoring and control of vessels and cargo handling. However, the challenges of infrastructure and cybersecurity associated with 5G implementation were also acknowledged.
