As of April 2025, citizens of 41 countries are allowed to enter the United States without a visa for up to 90 days under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). This initiative, administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, is designed to facilitate international travel while maintaining high security standards. It encourages tourism, business engagements, and cultural exchanges by removing the need for a traditional visa among eligible travelers.

Which Countries Are On The List? Is India Included?
According to Financial Express, the following countries are part of the Visa Waiver Program:
Andorra
Australia
Austria
Belgium
Brunei
Chile
Croatia
Czech Republic
Denmark
Estonia
Finland
France
Germany
Greece
Hungary
Iceland
Ireland
Israel
Italy

Luxembourg
Malta
Monaco
Netherlands
New Zealand
Norway
Poland
Portugal
Qatar
Romania
San Marino
Singapore
Slovakia
Slovenia

United Kingdom
India is not part of the VWP, which means Indian citizens must apply for a U.S. visa through the usual consular process. Despite ongoing discussions between both countries, India has not yet been included in the list due to various diplomatic and security considerations.
What Activities Are Allowed Under The VWP?
Eligible travelers may engage in a range of activities while visiting the U.S. under the VWP, including:
Tourism or vacation
Visiting friends or family
Receiving medical treatment
Attending business, educational, scientific, or professional conventions/conferences
Participating in short-term training (without payment from a U.S. source, other than reimbursement for expenses)
Negotiating business contracts
Participating in amateur musical, sports, or similar events or contests (without receiving payment)
Enrolling in short recreational courses of study (not for academic credit)
However, the program does not permit:
Studying for academic credit
Employment or paid work
Representing foreign media (e.g., journalists, film crews)
Seeking permanent residency in the U.S.
ESTA: Mandatory Travel Authorization
To travel under the VWP, travelers must obtain approval through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)-a web-based system managed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
ESTA is mandatory for all VWP travelers.
It is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
ESTA authorization must be obtained before boarding a flight to the U.S.
Exceptions: Who Must Still Apply For A Visa?
Even if you're a citizen of a VWP country, you must apply for a traditional B-1/B-2 visitor visa if any of the following apply:
You have visited or been present in North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen on or after March 1, 2011.
You have visited or been present in Cuba on or after January 12, 2021.
You hold dual nationality with Cuba, North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria.
In such cases, you are not eligible for ESTA and must follow the standard visa application process through a U.S. embassy or consulate.
