ABB Secures Major Order for Advanced Propulsion Systems in Mumbai Metro Expansion

ABB has secured a major order from Titagarh Rail Systems to supply advanced propulsion systems and Train Control and Management System software for the Mumbai Metro expansion. This includes equipment for Lines 5 and 6, enhancing urban mobility in the region.

ABB, a leader in electrification and automation, has announced a significant contract with Titagarh Rail Systems. The agreement involves supplying advanced propulsion systems and Train Control and Management System (TCMS) software for the Mumbai Metro. This project includes 18 six-car trainsets for Line 6 and 22 six-car trainsets for Line 5, offering a comprehensive traction and control solution.

Advanced Technology for Mumbai Metro

The order covers Mumbai Metro's Line 5, known as the Orange Line, which runs from Thane to Kalyan via Bhiwandi, and Line 6, the Pink Line, stretching from Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli. ABB's delivery will include traction converters, auxiliary converters, traction motors, and TCMS software. These components are designed to ensure high reliability, energy efficiency, and optimised lifecycle performance.

Manufacturing for this project will be carried out at ABB’s facilities in India. Converters will be produced in Bengaluru, while motors will be manufactured in Vadodara. Local engineering, testing, and service teams will support these operations. Financial specifics of the order have not been disclosed.

Strategic Partnership with Titagarh

This order signifies ABB's entry into India's 25 kV AC metro segment. Roger Buchmann, Global Business Line Head- Rail Systems at ABB, stated that this is a significant milestone that expands their technology presence in the metro rail sector. "This order marks ABB’s entry into the 25 kV AC metro segment in India," he said.

The collaboration between ABB and Titagarh began in 2023. This partnership aims to enhance metro projects across India. The new order further strengthens this strategic alliance.

ABB is committed to enabling a more sustainable and resource-efficient future through its global leadership in electrification and automation. This project is part of one of India's most significant urban mobility initiatives.
