Adidas, the renowned athletic apparel giant, has initiated an investigation into serious allegations of "compliance violations" within its operations in China. This move comes after the company received an anonymous letter on June 7, which accused local executives of embezzling "millions of euros." The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg have reported on this development, highlighting the gravity of the accusations that have surfaced.

The anonymous letter, which has been a topic of widespread discussion on social media and was reported by Chinese state media outlet Jiemian, alleges that senior executives and several staff members engaged in corrupt practices. These include embezzlement, accepting bribes from suppliers in various forms such as cash and real estate, and receiving kickbacks from celebrities and advertising agencies. Furthermore, one senior executive has been accused of workplace bullying, including swearing at subordinates, and nepotism.
In response to these allegations, Adidas has confirmed that it is conducting a thorough investigation with the assistance of external legal counsel. The company's proactive stance on these allegations underscores its commitment to maintaining ethical practices across its global operations.
The whistleblowers have warned that if Adidas fails to address these issues adequately, they will escalate the matter by disclosing it to external media and legal departments. This situation puts Adidas in a challenging position as it navigates through the allegations while trying to uphold its reputation.
Following the news of the investigation, Adidas shares experienced a decline of 1.73 per cent on Tuesday. This incident has raised concerns among investors and stakeholders about the potential impact on the company's financial health and brand image.
Greater China, which includes mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, is a significant market for Adidas, accounting for 15 per cent of its sales according to its 2023 annual report. The German brand holds the position of the second-largest sportswear brand in China, trailing behind Nike. Despite facing sales declines between 2019 and 2022 due to COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns and backlash over refusing to use Xinjiang cotton—alleged to involve forced labour—Adidas Greater China sales grew by 8 per cent in 2023.
Adidas has historically leveraged popular Chinese celebrities as brand ambassadors to enhance its market presence in China. Notable figures include singer and actor Jackson Yee, rapper Gali, and Dilraba, a singer of Uyghur descent. These endorsements have played a crucial role in Adidas's marketing strategy within the Chinese market.
