Summer in India is round the corner as the heat waves slowly kick in; the demand for AC will increase considerably. However, reports suggest that India may witness a major shortage of air conditioners (ACs) this year, which may lead to potential out-of-stock situations across the country.
What is causing the AC shortage in India?
Air conditioner manufacturers are expected to face supply chain disruptions, particularly with compressor shortages in April, which is expected to have a giant impact on the production, as NDTV reported. This could slow down manufacturing, limiting the availability of ACs in the coming hotter months of April, May, and June.

Industry insiders are currently worrying that if demand surpasses expectations, retailers could run out of stock quickly. Consumers who are planning to purchase ACs later in the season may find limited options or higher prices due to less supply.
AC Stocks Rally Ahead of Peak Season
Since summer is fast approaching, air conditioner sector stocks are witnessing a strong surge with rising demand. The AC sector has extended its rally with the expectations of higher sales and potential supply shortages.
Blue Star shares surged nearly 9% recently before undergoing a slight correction. Currently, the stock is trading at Rs.2,086 apiece, down 0.67%. However, it has gained 11% over the past few trading sessions.
Similarly, Voltas shares also saw an early surge before a mild pullback. As of now, the stock is trading at Rs.1,401, down 0.57%. Despite minor corrections, AC stocks remain in focus as the industry is looking forward to peak summer demand.
AC Sales in India Expected to Surge
Just like every year during the summer season, the demand for air conditioners and coolers witnesses a significant surge; sales of cooling appliances like AC and coolers rose, and this year is expected to be no different. Industry experts predict a 25-30% jump in AC sales this season.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the summer of 2025 is likely to be one of the hottest on record, with temperatures already showing an upward trend. The scorching heat is expected to push consumers toward purchasing air conditioners and coolers to combat the rising temperatures.
Impact on AC Prices and Inventory
If supply remains, downside AC prices in India could rise due to increased demand and limited stock. Consumers may also experience delays in AC deliveries, especially for popular models and brands. Due to this rise in demand, dealers and retailers might face inventory shortages, affecting sales and customer satisfaction.
Thus, consumers looking to buy an AC should consider making their purchase early to avoid price hikes and stock shortages. Additionally, retailers are advised to manage inventory efficiently to meet the expected surge in demand.
