On a poignant Monday morning at the city airport, Air India staff bid farewell to one of their last Boeing 747 aircraft, marking the conclusion of nearly five decades of its service. This iconic double-decker plane, affectionately known as the Queen of the Skies, embarked on its final journey to the US, leaving behind a legacy of commercial, VVIP, and evacuation flights. The departure was accentuated with a wing wave maneuver, a traditional aerial salute for retiring aircraft. This gesture symbolized the end of an era for Air India, a carrier with roots stretching back to 1932 and now under the stewardship of the Tata Group.

The Boeing 747 has been pivotal in Air India's operations, notably executing two medical evacuation flights to Wuhan, China, during the nascent stages of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. A video capturing the aircraft's takeoff and the ceremonial wing wave was shared by Air India, expressing gratitude for the years of service and acknowledging the aircraft's iconic stature. The footage showcased Air India personnel waving farewell as the plane ascended into the Mumbai skies.
This final flight attracted considerable attention, becoming one of the most tracked on the flightradar24 website. Mumbai airport's operator also shared this momentous occasion on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting the aircraft's last departure from their premises. The Boeing 747, named Agra and inducted into Air India's fleet in October 1996, completed its last commercial flight in March 2021.
Air India's association with the Boeing 747 dates back to 1971, with these aircraft serving as carriers for Indian dignitaries such as presidents, vice presidents, and prime ministers until they were replaced by Boeing 777s. The 747s boasted a seating capacity of 423 across different classes. Boeing first introduced the B747-100 model in 1968, with Air India being among its initial customers.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) deregistered all four of Air India's 747s in November 2022, following Tata Group's decision to sell them. This move came after Boeing announced in July 2020 that it would cease production of the Queen of the Skies by end-2022 due to changing market preferences. Atlas Air placed the final order for four 747-8 freighters, marking the end of an era for this iconic jumbo jet program.
Over a span of 55 years, Boeing produced a total of 1,574 B747 aircraft for more than 100 customers worldwide, including Air India. The transition of ownership from a loss-making entity to Tata Group in January 2022 signifies a new chapter for Air India while honoring its rich history and contributions to aviation.
