Air India Flights Big Alert: This Tata Group Airline To Cut Flights Till July; How Check Your Flights Status?

India's leading airline that is backed by Tata Group is cutting some of its international flights till July 2026. Among reasons behind the flights cut are airspace curbs, spike in jet fuel prices and unprofitable routes. This is none other than Air India. The latest decision comes after the airline increased its fuel surcharge and airfares. Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson said the surcharge and hike in fares had barely helped the airline to make gains because it pushed passengers at home. That being said, here's how you should check flight status of Air India.

Air India Cuts Flights:

CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson said, "We have reduced some flying for April and May...massive rise in jet fuel prices which, together with airspace closures and longer flying routes, have caused many of our international flights to become unprofitable to operate," as reported by PTI. This he said in a message to the staff.

According to the report, the West Asia war's impact on airspace has pushed Air India to take longer routes which resulted in surge in fuel burn. This is amidst hike in jet fuel prices.

It is reported that Air India has likely incurred hefty Rs 22,000 crore losses for the financial year 2025-26.

Another report said that the airline will likely reduced services to destinations like Europe, North America, Australia, and Singapore.

The CEO pointed out that the current situation in geopolitics remain 'extremely challenging' forcing Air India to take additional measures. He said, the airspace and jet fuel price situation is extremely challenging for Air India, leaving them with no option but to reduce flight schedules in June and July as well.

He said, "The profitability of domestic flights has also been significantly affected, but to a lesser degree, thanks to the government's limitation of the domestic fuel price rise to 25%."

Aviation Turbine Fuel Prices Hike 2026:

For May 2026, Indian oil companies have hiked jet fuel prices for international airlines by 5%. In Delhi, ATF is hiked by $76.55 per kiloliter or 5.33% to $1,511.86 per kiloliter. A PTI report cited sources who revealed that under this mechanism, foreign airlines and other carriers will pay market-linked rates, while prices for domestic airlines have been moderated.

In April 2026, the oil marketing companies more than doubled the price of jet fuel for domestic airlines to a record high of over 2,07,341.22 lakh per kL from April 1 Rs 2.07 lakh per kiloliter.

For the first time ever, the price of aviation turbine fuel has crossed Rs 2 lakh mark. With approximately a 115% hike, the ATF is priced at Rs 2,07,341.22 lakh per kL in Delhi with effect from April 1, for non-scheduled carriers and charters. In the previous month, the price stood at Rs 96,638 per kL in the national capital.

The highest increase was done in Chennai with ATF costing at Rs 214,597.66/KL, registering a surge of Rs 114,317.17 from the previous month's price of Rs 100,280.49.

Air India Fuel Surcharge:

Following the massive hike in April, Air India revised its fuel surcharge structure across domestic and international routes.

Distance Band (km)Revised Fuel Surcharge
0-500INR 299
501-1000INR 399
1001-1500INR 549
1501-2000INR 749
2000+INR 899

"We have increased airfares and imposed fuel surcharges, but these higher fares impact customer demand. We can only raise fares so much before people decide to stay home," the CEO added further.

The Air India's decision comes four days after the Federation of Indian Airlines wrote to Ministry of Civil Aviation for urgent need of assistance as the jet fuel prices hike is reportedly causing extreme stress to the industry. In the letter, FIA said that the stress has pushed airlines at the edge of collapse.

"The airline Industry in India is under extreme stress and is on the verge of closing down or of stopping its operations. The dire condition of the Aviation Sector has been exacerbated by the West Asia War and the exorbitant increase in the price of ATF," the FIA letter said.

Further, FIA added that the ATF pricing for international operations was increased by Rs.73 per litre, making practically international operations along with domestic operations completely unviable and resulting in significant losses for the aviation sector in April 2026.
