Air India Introduces Lowest-Cost Basic Ticket Option; How To Get Free Meals, Extra Baggage & Free Rescheduling

Air India has introduced a new "Basic Fare" option for domestic Economy Class passengers, offering a cheaper ticket but removing complimentary meals on board. The move comes as the full-service airline continues to deal with rising operational costs while attempting to provide more flexible pricing choices for passengers.

Air India Introduces Basic Fare Without Complimentary Meals on Domestic Flights

The airline clarified that the Basic Fare is optional and does not replace existing fare categories. Passengers will continue to have access to three other fare types-Value, Classic, and Flex-which remain bundled with additional benefits, including complimentary meals and progressively higher service features depending on the fare selected.

Air India Flights Tickets Become Cheaper with Basic Fare

According to the airline, the Basic Fare is currently being tested on select domestic routes on a pilot basis. It is designed for price-conscious travellers who prefer a more unbundled travel experience and want lower ticket prices without paying for additional services.

No Free Meals, But Standard Baggage Allowance Remains Intact

Under the new Basic Fare, passengers will still receive certain standard inclusions. These include a 15 kg checked baggage allowance, 7 kg cabin baggage allowance, and complimentary beverage service such as tea or coffee. However, complimentary hot meals will not be included in this category.

In contrast, the three existing fare categories-Value, Classic, and Flex-continue to include complimentary hot meals along with bundled services and additional benefits at higher price points.

Cheaper Air India Tickets With Fewer Services in Basic Fare

According to Air India, the Basic Fare is designed especially for price-sensitive travellers who prefer a more unbundled travel experience. The airline said it aims to give passengers more control over what they pay for, allowing them to choose whether they want added services such as meals and flexibility or simply a lower base fare.

How to Get Complimentary Meals, More Baggage and Lower Rescheduling Fees in Air India

Air India Economy Value Fare: In comparison, the Value Fare continues to offer complimentary hot meals along with a standard 15 kg baggage allowance. The Classic Fare also includes complimentary meals but provides additional flexibility benefits such as lower rescheduling fees and, in some cases, a higher baggage allowance of up to 25 kg along with an extra 10 kg allowance.

Air India Economy Flex Fare: The Flex Fare sits at the premium end of the economy options, offering complimentary meals, the lowest cancellation charges, and the highest flexibility. Passengers under this category can reschedule flights at no additional cost and benefit from more relaxed booking conditions compared to the other fare types.

Air India has structured its domestic fare system to clearly differentiate between cost and services. While Basic Fare is the most economical option, it comes with reduced inclusions, whereas Value, Classic, and Flex fares progressively add more benefits, including meals, flexibility in cancellations, and baggage advantages.

Air India International Flights Continue With Complimentary Meals Across All Fare Types

For international routes, the airline continues to offer Value, Classic, and Flex fares across Economy, Premium Economy, and Business Class. These international fare categories include complimentary hot meals across all options, with varying baggage allowances and flexibility levels.

Value Fare provides standard baggage and meals, Classic Fare offers additional baggage allowance of 5 kg or 11 lb, and Flex Fare provides up to 10 kg or 22 lb extra baggage along with greater flexibility in changes and cancellations.

In terms of cancellation and change policies, Basic and Value fares follow standard rescheduling and cancellation charges, while Classic fares offer lower fees. Flex fares provide the highest flexibility, including free rescheduling and minimal cancellation costs. Across most categories, no-show refunds are typically limited to taxes only.
