Air India pilots unions have raised concerns over alleged intimidation and coercion by the airline management to extend flight duty timings beyond prescribed limits, compromising safety and violating regulations.
In a concerning development, Air India pilots' associations, the Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA) and the Indian Pilots Guild (IPG), have raised serious allegations against the airline's management. The unions have accused the management of intimidating and coercing some pilots to extend their flight duty timings beyond the prescribed limits, compromising safety and violating established regulations.

Concerns Over Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) Extension
The joint letter, dated January 28, highlights the pilots' apprehension that certain individuals are facing pressure to extend their Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) beyond the prescribed limits. This practice not only jeopardizes the well-being and safety of the pilots but also contravenes established regulations.
Safety Compromised, Regulations Violated
The unions emphasize that extending FDTL poses a significant risk to both the pilots and the integrity of Air India's operations. They assert that such actions undermine the principles of safety and compliance, which are paramount in the aviation industry.
Immediate Intervention Sought
ICPA and IPG have called for the immediate intervention of Air India's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Campbell Wilson, to investigate these allegations and put an end to any coercive practices related to FDTL extensions. They have warned that if these practices persist, they will be compelled to approach the regulatory authorities with evidence, including call records, to ensure transparency and accountability.
Regulatory Changes and Pilots' Commitment
The pilots' concerns gain added significance in light of the recent revisions to FDTL norms by the aviation regulator, DGCA. These revised norms provide for increased weekly rest periods, an extension in night hours by an hour, and a reduction in night landings from six to just two. Despite these changes, the unions maintain their commitment to upholding the highest standards of safety and compliance within the organization.
Duty to Passengers and Industry Reputation
The unions emphasize that their duty extends not only to the company but also to the safety of passengers and the reputation of the aviation industry. They have marked copies of the letter to key stakeholders, including Tata Group and Air India Chairman N Chandrasekaran, Air India Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Klaus Goersch, and Chief of Flight Safety Rajeev Gupta, among others.
Air India has yet to respond to these allegations. The situation underscores the importance of prioritizing safety and adhering to regulations in the aviation industry.
