Flying to Washington? Air India to Suspend Delhi-Washington DC Flights From September 1; Check Other Options!

Air India has announced the suspension of its non-stop flights between Delhi and Washington DC, effective September 1, 2025. The airline cited a combination of operational reasons, including a shortage of aircraft and airspace restrictions, as key factors behind this decision.

Air India To Suspend Flight Services To Washington DC

In an official statement released on Monday, Air India said the suspension is primarily driven by fleet limitations, as the airline undertakes an extensive retrofitting program for its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner fleet. The retrofit, which began last month, will involve the refurbishment of 26 aircraft, significantly reducing the number of wide-body jets available for long-haul services.

"The suspension is primarily driven by the planned shortfall in Air India's fleet, as the airline commenced retrofitting 26 of its Boeing 787-8 aircraft last month," the airline said.

The airline added that the program is part of a long-term plan to enhance customer experience and upgrade onboard services. However, the process is expected to stretch into late 2026, making multiple aircraft unavailable simultaneously.

Pakistan Air Space Closure, Key Reason Behind It

Air India also pointed to the ongoing closure of Pakistani airspace as another contributing factor. Since flights between India and certain Western destinations are now forced to take longer alternative routes, the increased flight duration and fuel costs have added pressure on the airline's operational capacity.

"That, coupled with the continued closure of airspace over Pakistan, impacts the airline's long-haul operations, leading to longer flight routings and increased operational complexity," the statement noted.

How Will It Impact Air India Customers Who Booked Tickets for Washington DC?

The suspension has raised concerns for passengers with existing bookings to or from Washington DC beyond September 1. Air India has assured that all affected customers will be contacted individually and provided with alternate travel options, which include rebooking on other available flights or receiving full refunds.

To ensure continued connectivity to Washington DC, Air India will offer one-stop travel options in partnership with major US carriers including Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines. These routes will transit via four key US gateway cities, New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Chicago, and San Francisco and will be available under a single ticket and checked baggage transfer policy for customer convenience.

Despite the suspension of the Washington DC route, Air India reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a robust transatlantic presence. The airline will continue to operate non-stop flights to six destinations in North America, including Toronto and Vancouver in Canada, as well as New York, Newark, Chicago, and San Francisco in the US.
